The Future of Learning: A Networked Society

         This video covered many topics but one that stood out to me was when they were talking about students conforming to schools. This is because we are taught in school that everyone has a different learning style and we need to try and reach out to each. The video compared that in the industrial revolution children were conformed to do jobs in the factories. This was then brought into the schools where they took a factory type approach and made the students conform to the system. When in reality like the video said the system is there for the students. Yes there does have to be some structure but it does not have to be like a factory line. In the video they brought up the issue of ADD and how these students are medicated to conform to the system. I believe this is one hundred percent true. Student whom have ADD take the medication and are no longer who they are. Some medications are so strong that are completely dazed and in that case don’t learn. Personally, I have seen this as I was an EA and can relate how the student is medicated to the point that they are dazed and not them self. The new program that they introduced is called Knewton. This program will help with designing lessons for each student and make it individual to that child’s learning. I think this may create problems, as a teaching job would then become a 24/7 job trying to create a lesson for each child in the class. The really neat thing about this was that I found Knewton told you when the child learns best and what subjects they learn best at what time.  For example Knewton will tell the teacher the exact time that the student learns math the best. This way during that time the teacher can personalize that students lesson and get them to do math at that certain time. I think this is great but I also think it could be a problem in the future as in a classroom there is so much going on in one classroom and a teacher would have to create 25 different lessons based on the learner. I am very interested to see if this system goes into schools in the future, as I would be interested in using it to see how students respond to it.
